Water vapor therapy

New treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia

R3zum is a minimally invasive procedure developed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition in older men in which an increase in the size of the prostate causes uncomfortable urinary symptoms. The name "R3zum" is derived from the words "RE" (meaning "Renewal" or "Restoration") and "ZUM" (the abbreviation for "Warming Wet Zone"), reflecting the use of water vapor to treat BPH.
The R3zum treatment is a less invasive alternative to other surgical treatments for BPH, such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or prostatectomy. It offers several advantages, including a lower risk of complications and a shorter recovery time, preservation of sexual function and fewer side effects compared to other treatments

See how it works in the video below

Advantages

  • Minimally invasive
  • Modality that most preserves sexual function
  • No need to be hospitalized
  • Low bleeding rate
  • Low failure rate over time (4.4% in 5 years)

What's new

  • It can be used as a first-line treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

  • Preservation of sexual function: R3zum has been shown to preserve patients' sexual function, including erection and ejaculation, which is a common concern with other treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

  • Minimally invasive procedure: R3zum is less invasive than other surgeries, such as prostatectomy or transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). This means there is less risk of complications and a shorter recovery time.
  • Sedation: The R3zum procedure can be performed under sedation, which means that the treatment avoids the risks associated with general anesthesia.
  • Shorter recovery time: Compared to other surgical treatments, R3zum generally has a shorter recovery time, allowing patients to return to their daily activities more quickly.
  • Efficacy: Studies have shown that R3zum is effective in reducing BPH symptoms, improving urinary flow and reducing the need for medication.
  • Reducing/eliminating the use of prostate medication: Many patients who use medication for BPH, when treated with R3zum, can reduce or completely eliminate the need for their use, eliminating undesirable side effects or drug interactions.
  • Day clinic: The R3zum treatment can be carried out in just one morning, without the need for hospitalization.

  • Fewer side effects: Compared to other surgical procedures, R3zum tends to have fewer side effects, such as bleeding, infection and urinary incontinence.

  • Low retreatment rate: R3zum treatment has a low retreatment rate, which means that most patients do not need to undergo additional procedures after the initial treatment.

  • Personalization of treatment: R3zum allows the doctor to personalize the treatment to meet the specific needs of each patient, including the amount of prostate tissue to be treated and the location of the affected areas.

  • Improved quality of life: With the reduction in BPH symptoms, patients treated with R3zum can experience a significant improvement in their quality of life, including fewer night-time trips to the toilet, which can improve sleep.

  • Focused treatment: R3zum uses focused thermal energy directly on the affected prostate tissue, which helps minimize the impact on the healthy tissue around the prostate.

Disadvantages

  • Effectiveness in severe cases: R3zum treatment may be less effective in cases of very severe benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or extremely enlarged prostates. Other treatment options may be more appropriate in these cases.
  • Temporary post-treatment symptoms: Some patients may experience temporary symptoms after the procedure, such as discomfort, urinary urgency, increased urinary frequency and blood in the urine. These symptoms usually subside after a few weeks.
  • Urinary retention: In some rare cases, R3zum treatment can lead to urinary retention temporaryThis may require the temporary use of a catheter.
  • Possibility of retreatment: Although the retreatment rate is low, some patients may need additional treatment in the future, either with R3zum or another technique.
  • Not immediate results: Improvement in BPH symptoms may take a few weeks or up to 03 months after R3zum treatment. This may be slower than other treatment options, such as surgery
