3D printing

Reconstruction of the left kidney with the renal vessels and a tumor in the upper pole

Surgical planning is a crucial stage in achieving the best result, avoiding complications and preserving the functionality of organs and tissues.
The advent of 3D printing has made it possible to create realistic three-dimensional models, allowing the surgical team to carry out simulations and studies prior to surgery. With this, doctors can figure out the best surgical approach and what strategy will be taken, all in advance. Three-dimensional files can be created from a CT or MRI scan. These files are inserted into 3D printers which materialize the solid in real size.
Today we have various materials available for printing, some of which are highly resistant, such as carbon fiber; others are malleable, similar to silicone. There is also the possibility of sterilizing the impression, allowing the model to be taken into the surgical field.
The technology is new and is growing exponentially in medicine around the world. It is already being used by Dr. Alexandre Miranda's team, which has dedicated itself to its research and implementation in the surgical setting.
