What we know is that the disease begins as an abnormal attempt at healing in a specific area of the tunica albuginea (the layer of tissue that surrounds the penis). In this process, there is an activation of cells (fibroblasts) that cause an excessive deposit of collagen. This collagen is rigid and prevents that region from expanding during erection, causing the curvature.
So, it's not caused by sexual trauma?
Although many people associate the onset of the disease with a specific event, a clear sexual trauma is only identified in about 10% of the cases.
It is believed that other factors are more relevant to “trigger” this abnormal healing process, such as:
- Genetic Predisposition: (For example, association with Dupuytren's Disease).
- Inflammatory factors and oxidative stress.
- Age and changes in connective tissue.
