The recurrence of the disease is considered rare, especially if the surgery is performed correctly after the patient reaches the chronic (stable) phase.
However, the risk of the curvature returning depends on the type of procedure performed:
- In Plication or Graft SurgeryYes, the chance of recurrence exists, although it is uncommon. The risk is higher if the surgery is performed improperly while the disease is still in the acute (inflammatory) phase.
- In surgeries involving a Penile ProsthesisRecurrence of curvature is practically impossible. The prosthesis acts as an internal support that forces the penis to remain straight during erection, mechanically preventing a new deformity from occurring.
