Peyronie's disease is a condition that causes penile curvature. It is caused by a fibrosis (an internal scar) in the tunica albuginea, leading to a hardened accumulation of collagen.
This collagen reduces the elasticity of one side of the penis. During an erection, the opposite (healthy) side stretches normally, while the affected side does not, which causes the curvature.
A exact cause is still unknown (idiopathic), but it is known that factors such as microtraumas (during sexual intercourse, for example), inflammatory processes, and genetic predisposition may contribute to the onset of the disease. Only about 10% of patients report a clear trauma associated with the onset.
